I like the Eels, so I feel bad saying this, but this did nothing for me. This is where they get all rocked-up, which could have been OK. There are still the quirky lyrics and classy songwriting (he cant help writing good songs, same as the Dandy Warhols), but somehow its just turned into generic indie rock, like Foo Fighters or whatever, which is surely of no interest to anyone. Or maybe I only liked them when they were miserable. I've noticed this tendency before. I loved Electro Shock Blues - those nice songs about suicide and cancer, not to mention the doodle on the inside cover of a boy shedding tears as he looks at a spilt bottle of milk. My faith isnt entirely shaken, though. Id still go back for more next release. |
